Ceiling Lighting

The fixed central light is the most common light fitting and is often the only source of light in a room. This style of fitting is available in a wide variety of styles and designs; including ceiling mounted globes, pendants and chandeliers. Wall Lights

Wall lights are simply lights that are mounted on a wall. They are good for producing a general background light. They can also be directional, as with wall-mounted up lighters. Wall lights are available in a wide range of styles, designs and materials and often look good positioned in pairs, for example at either end of a sofa. It’s better to position lights around permanent features, rather than something you may want to replace or change in the future. Lighting Desires has several hundred wall lights of different styles, both for indoor and outdoor use.

Downlighting

Downlights are positioned to direct light downwards. This fitting can be either fully or partially recessed, it can also be surface-mounted. The can be fixed or adjustable so you can focus light on a specific point, such as an object, picture or feature. However glare can be an issue with down lights so care should be taken when positioning. They are often best combined with other types of fittings, such as table or floor lights. Fully recessed down lights require space above to provide ventilation and should be accessible for maintenance. Down lights may also require a fire hood if the fireproofing is not already an integral part of the fitting. This should all be checked with a qualified electrician.

Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor lighting allows you to enjoy your garden after dark. Placing lights at the entrance of your home provides essential illumination both for yourself and visitors. Pairs of lights positioned either side of the door will cast an even light and fitting motion sensors or timers is a good way of conserving energy, but still having light when it’s needed. When lighting your garden, less is often more. Lighting effects should be subtle, while allowing enough light for you to comfortably spend time outside. There are many different types of lighting suitable for application outdoors or in the garden. Bathroom Lighting

Bathrooms have special requirements when it comes to lighting. Because bathrooms are the only room in a house where lights are likely to be exposed to varying levels of water, special care must be taken to ensure your bathroom lighting has an appropriate Immersion Protection (IP) rating for the amount of water exposure. For example, for a bathroom ceiling light or wall light, an IP rating of 44 may be sufficient, as the second digit means the light fitting is suitably protected against water spray. For lighting that may be exposed to jets of water, a higher IP rating such as IP66 will be required.
